Acknowledgments
This book is adapted from a 2019 PhD dissertation. Thus I owe my thanks to my PhD supervisors, Gesine Manuwald and Fiachra Mac Góráin, and to my defence committee, Helen Lovatt and Mairéad McAuley for their support, suggestions and direction. My thanks also to the reviewer at Brill for the positive feedback and constructive criticism which guided the revision process. Thank you to the editor, Giulia, and the board at Brill for their indulgence with regard to timelines.
I also owe my deepest gratitude to the other teachers, professors and mentors who encouraged and exhorted me in the pursuit of writing and Classical Studies, and in this project in particular: AA, MP, GW, JG, LH, HS, JB and most especially, SH.
Many thanks to my non-Classicist friends for their support, and my family, especially ST, EV and JTV for their help in the proofreading process. Last and most of all, I thank my husband John for his constant encouragement, and our three sons and cat, Joab, who have shared my time with this project, and alongside Latin poetry are the great joys of my life.
SOLI DEO GLORIA.
