Abstract

In the second half of the fifteenth century, the Academy founded in Rome by Pomponio Leto longed to rediscover the glories of the past with the help of tangible Roman ruins. The location of the Academy and Pomponio’s house in the area called Montecavallo, near the ruins of Constantine’s Baths and the statues of the Dioscuri, was crucial. Pomponio’s passion for antiquity was also evident in his private garden, where he displayed his collection of epigraphs and ancient marbles, creating a link with history that he eagerly shared with his students. This chapter shows how, in organizing his collection and designing his garden, Leto sought to realize an ethical and philosophical project aimed at reviving ancient passions and virtues in the present.
