Abstract

The Accademia Pontaniana was the earliest and among the most widely imitated humanist academies of the Quattrocento. It was also the cradle of Sannazaro’s Arcadia, an allegory of the literary life of the Neapolitan elite which inspired a vast European literature of pastoral prose and poetry. This chapter explores the real green spaces of the Accademia Pontaniana as depicted in the works of its maestro, Giovanni Pontano (1426-1503), and other contemporary humanists. The Neapolitan academy first began hosting symposia, concerts, and poetic recitals in the gardens of the Villa Pliniana, the estate belonging to Antonio Beccadelli (1394–1471) on the coast of Resina. After Beccadelli’s death, banquets continued to be held in the gardens of Pontano’s Villa Antiniana, and at his villa on the Via dei Tribunali. This chapter analyses these gardens as spaces of leisure, dialogue, and literary performance and, where possible, attempts to reconstruct their topography and horticultural programmes.
