Abstract

Laying aside the source critical and socio-religious approaches favoured thus far, Chapter 5 provides a historical account of Paulician activity within the Byzantine Empire from their first reliable appearance in Byzantine sources at the turn of the ninth century until the eve of the persecution of the movement during the regency of Theodora. In doing so, it integrates the testimony of the Paulician sources directed by Sergios-Tychikos into a broader historical account of the period derived from our Greek and Arabic sources. Thus, it analyses the causes and consequences of Byzantine persecution against the movement under Michael I (811â813) and Leo V (813â820), arguing that an organised Paulician military threat had not arisen before the 840s by tracing the military developments of the period, including the rebellion of Thomas the Slav and the campaigns of Theophilos (829â842) in the east. Particular attention is paid to the Khurramiyya, a purportedly Neo-Mazdakite movement based in peripheral areas of the âAbbÄsid Caliphate, whose presence in Theophilosâ armies provides an invaluable comparison point for the treatment of militant dualists at this time. Finally, the chapter discusses the possible Paulician sympathies of Lizix and the advent of persecution under Theodora.
