Abstract

The introduction situates the present study of the Paulicians within previous work on the subject by outlining the historiographical and methodological approaches of existing studies and advocating a new approach based on the utilization of previously neglected ninth-century Paulician texts. In doing so, it introduces those historical schools which have attributed dualist or adoptionist beliefs to the Paulicians and explains their relationships to historiographically important metanarratives, including Catholic and Protestant scholarship, and the academic disciplines of Armenology and Byzantine Studies. It then provides an overview of the Armenian sources for the heresy predating the period covered by this book, noting that although intercourse with Armenian actors was clearly instrumental to the Paulicians of our period, they cannot be straightforwardly identified with earlier Armenian heretics. Finally, the introduction concludes with an extended account of Paulician history as currently accepted, thereby allowing the reader to navigate the revised portrayal developed in the following chapters, including a brief survey of Paulician activity beyond our period. While doing so, particular attention is paid to explaining the methodological problematics of the “two faces of the Paulicians”, that is, their religious and militaristic facets, noting that there is some doubt as to whether these correspond to the same phenomenon, or were assimilated into one by the identification strategies of Byzantine actors.
