Abstract

This chapter examines the political and social context of the sequence Ex te lux oritur, which celebrates the marriage in 1281 of Erik II, King of Norway (1268â1299), to Margaret of Scotland (1261â1283). Uniquely found in in Uppsala Universitetsbiblioteket MS C 233, Ex te lux oritur has been described as either Norwegian or Orcadian in origin, primarily on codicological grounds. A close analysis of its textual features, however, reveals links to English literary conventions, gender norms, and political rhetoric that indicate the work was authored by someone with a close connection to the Plantagenet court. I suggest that the text and music of the sequence were authored by the English poet and composer John of Howden (fl. ca. 1268â75), a chaplain of Eleanor of Provence (?1223â1291), then dowager Queen of England and Margaret of Scotlandâs grandmother. A close reading of Ex te lux oritur demonstrates not only its affinity with Howdenâs corpus but also its sensitive, personal perspective on the experience of queenship, pointing to Eleanor as the most likely commissioner of the work.
