Abstract

The Kandozi and Chapra people live in a linguistically diverse part of the Western Amazon basin. Although their language is an isolate, they form part of a wider cultural area in which many elements of traditional culture are shared with neighbouring ethnic groups speaking unrelated languages. One of these shared cultural elements is the existence of a number of distinct genres of traditional songs. In Kandozi-Chapra tradition these genres include hunting songs (sung by men); shamanic chants; and drinking songs. This last genre consists of songs that are sung by women while serving masato (manioc beer) to male family members at parties. The bittersweet lyrics of the drinking songs reflect on the fleeting nature of good times and the inevitability of death, and the familial love that is embodied in the sharing of masato. They may include bird metaphors, which are particularly suited to the themes of devotion to family and social singing and dancing that the songs evoke—bird and animal metaphors are a recurrent phenomenon in other song genres of the area too. While some neighbouring cultural traditions also have a genre of songs specific to drinking parties, they differ in their lyrical themes and manner of performance. This chapter describes the Kandozi-Chapra drinking songs both within their own cultural and linguistic context, and as part of the wider cultural area.
