Abstract

Explains the aim of the study; provides an overview of the πολίτευμα papyri as an archive; surveys the contents of the archive; addresses the date, provenance, and people of the archive, and the Jewish πολίτευμα in Herakleopolis as the context for the archive; and speaks to the study’s challenge to the dominant view that the Jews of the petitions made little reference to their own legal traditions, relying instead almost exclusively on “Hellenized” legal reasoning.
