Acknowledgments
This volume is based on the international research project Icelandic Philology and National Culture 1780–1918, led by Gylfi Gunnlaugsson and Clarence E. Glad and funded by the Icelandic Research Fund in the years 2014–17. The project was hosted by the Reykjavik Academy, which also gave financial support for the final stage of preparing the manuscript. The project developed through the course of time in a dialogue between the members of the team. Of vital importance in this regard was the fact that we were able to meet for joint working sessions in Frankfurt am Main 2015 and in Amsterdam 2016. The first of these meetings received support from the Vereinigung von Freunden und Förderern der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt; the second was financed mainly by SPIN (the Study Platform on Interlocking Nationalisms), which is headed by Professor Joep Leerssen. We are deeply grateful for all the financial support our undertaking has received. We also wish to thank Professor Leerssen for the invaluable advice and goodwill he provided from the outset. Three scholars who played an active part in the project for various lengths of time are not represented by articles published here: Gottskálk Jensson, Kim Simonsen and Julia Zernack (†), who demonstrated her interest in the work to the very end. We are indebted to them for their input; specifically, though, we wish to thank all contributors to the volume for their patience and unwavering dedication to this work.
Note
