Acknowledgments
It has been a pleasure to collaborate with the contributors to this volume. They have been exemplary colleagues, and their shared enthusiasm for Valerius Maximus’ Facta et dicta memorabilia, the historical context in which it was produced, and the work’s reception history, we hope, bodes well for future research on this author. We, the editors, are especially grateful to our colleagues at the University of Cape Town for their encouragement and advice not only in the production of this book, but also for their help in organising “Valerius Maximus: 25 Years After Bloomer”, the conference from which many of the papers in this volume arise. Mention must be made specifically of Berenice Bentel, Chuck Chandler, Alwin-Jon Hills, Stewart Innes, Elouise Petersen, Karin Schmid, Matthew Shelton, Vanessa Everson, and Shirley Whitmore. Thanks should also be given to the series editors, Carsten Hjort Lange and Jesper Majbom Madsen, for their support of this project. Finally, we are also grateful to Clive Kirkwood and the Jagger Library at the University of Cape Town for permission to use the image of a 1471 incunabulum held within their Special Collections on the cover of this book. Fortunately, the volume survived the UCT fire of 18 April 2021 which partially destroyed the library.
