Abstract

This chapter studies the semantic extensions of the Fulfulde body part term gite ‘eyes’ into various linguistic domains. As reported for other languages, the Fulfulde semantic extensions of the term are cognitively motivated, as the speakers’ bodily and cultural experiences form the basis for the conceptualizations and expressions of abstract domains via this term. The data, collected from various written sources, was analysed based on the framework of the Conceptual Metaphor and Metonymy theories. The term gite ‘eyes’ was found to be extended into several abstract domains, which are discussed in section four of the chapter.
