Abstract

Neither the Danish cartoons nor Geert Wilderâs controversial documentary Fitna would have been possible without the precedent set by Hirsi Aliâs âSubmission,â the screenplay that Theo van Gogh paid for with his life. In a fashion mirroring Michel Houellebecq, Hirsi Ali garnered favorable media coverage, which led to the repositioning of the Dutch and French news coverage of political events. In both France and the Netherlands, the media was no longer embodying the âwatchdogâ role that required them to be impartial and investigative. That role has been largely abandoned in the coverage of both Hirsi Ali and Houellebecq, despite the difference in time frames. In both countries, the partisan media abandoned their partisanship when these two controversial celebrities took center stage.
