Professor Brady, an expert on the historiography as well as the history of the Holy Roman Empire, looks again at the idea of Germany’s Sonderweg, both its positive versions among the followers of Leopold von Ranke and some negative ones after World War Two. Noting that the Holy Roman Empire, in view of its long survival, cannot have been as weak as is alleged, he examines “three dominant characteristics of the Holy Roman Empire during the early modern era: first, the traditional, non-national character of the imperial monarchy; second, the prominence of small states; and third the active participation in public life by the church in the guise of the three confessions....” Brady shows how these features already set Germany apart from the nations to its west, as, one after another, they diverged from the late medieval European pattern into “centralized governance, commercialized warfare, and seaborne empire.” With frequent reference to the work of Peter Blickle, Brady points to the rural communes of the Rhine and Danube basins. Here ideas of liberty and quality persisted among peasants and villagers and provided a model that was feared by some and emulated by others, even beyond the region. Such popular communalism included control of religion. The people adhered tenaciously to their own variety of Christianity and resisted confessionalization. Thus, Brady concludes, only after 1800 did Germany really begin its Sonderweg—toward, not away from, the West.
