Abstract

Several criticisms of neo-Victorianism observe repeating patterns of imperialism in the âBritishâ focus that is evident when reimagining the nineteenth century. The 1831 uprising, led by Nat Turner in Virginia, is reimagined in two texts in dialogue with one another: Nate Parkerâs The Birth of Nation (2016) and William Styronâs The Confessions of Nat Turner (1967). This chapter reads the intimacies between multivalent connotations of âinsideâ and âoutsideâ in these texts â and their significance to black literature(s). Recognising these elements of neo-/post-slave narratives advances a timely renovation of the neo-Victorian in order to incorporate locations (and perspectives) beyond Britain and Europe.
