Abstract

Contradiction plays a decisive role in Hegel’s system of philosophy. This is well known. Less well known is what Hegel exactly understands by this determination of thought. In this article, therefore, Hegel’s deduction of contradiction in his Doctrine of Essence will be analysed. It will be shown that Hegel gives contradiction a precise meaning. It will be shown further that for Hegel contradiction plays a substantial role in what he calls determined negation. The insight into the concept of contradiction thus helps to give the concept of determined negation a better understanding. This will be illustrated at prominent points in his Phenomenology of Spirit and his Science of Logic. It will be demonstrated that Hegel by no means, as he is accused, allows the contradiction to “exist” in his system, but that contradictions are generated by determined negation only insofar as they indicate the finiteness of determinations of thought. But by necessity, they dissolve again, creating higher determinations of thought.
