Abstract

With increased attention on the consideration of innovative learning practices as a professional development strategy for preparing students to live and work sustainably in the future,the shift from an instruction paradigm to a learning paradigm has acquired its renaissance. This has highlighted the impact of work-based learning, practice, and student engagement on the development of sustainable skill development.

This chapter investigates the correlation between the concepts of innovation and professional development through an empirical case study. The aim is to uncover how student-driven innovations prepare learners for an unknown future and how the ‘Wood Pieces’ initiative supports students’ ‘becoming’.

The study confirms the importance of student-driven initiatives as a practical method for providing students with 21st century skills, such as creativity, communication and critical thinking; empowering them for a more sustainable personal and professional future.
