Abstract

The breakout of protests logistic porters erupting around 2010 in the North of Italy unexpectedly put into question the equilibrium of power in a booming sector. The porters are employed in the last link of the value-chain along which the logistic sector is organised. The absolute majority of them are migrants working for cooperatives entrusted by firms and multi-client companies to manage logistic services. In 2010, activists of social movements and independent unions founded SI Cobas, a radical union with a Marxist internationalist vocation which arose specifically around the figure of the logistics porters. In few years, SI Cobas turned out to be the first union in the sector. Its sudden dramatic diffusion was the result of the crisis of representation of traditional trade unionism. The status of migrants concurred to give a high political significance to the protests of this group of workers. It contributed in turn to create a proper collective subject able to move a critical mass. This chapter intends to retrace the peculiar experience of SI Cobas, focusing on the events, the factors and the trade unions’ choices, fostering the creation of a political actor supported by a network of allies among the local community; and on the implication of this pattern of mobilization on the labour movement as a whole.
