Chapter 3 focuses on Mark 1:16â4:34, evaluating the dynamics of Jesusâ self-disclosure through mighty deeds and the different negative responses to him against the framework provided in chapter 2. The mighty deeds of Jesus are explained as revelatory events, which lead to questions of identity, and are met with a gradual rejection of this self-disclosure through the authoritiesâ resistance. This resistance takes shape in a progression from cognitive deliberation to willful incomprehension and obdurate rejection, culminating with the sequence in 3:20â35. Such a response is met with Jesusâ evaluation of resistance and his pronouncement of judgement, using the language of Isa 6:9â10. Here the focus is particularly on the resistance performed by the religious authorities, which initiates the dynamic contrast between insiders and outsiders that will set the stage for the introduction of the resistance of the disciples.
