Abstract

This chapter engages with questions on the role of politics and ideology in the historiographies of international law through a case-study: slavery, and more specifically the slave trade. It argues that international lawyers tend to examine the history of their field in relation to slavery in either one of two ways. In the standard narrative, the point of departure is the slave trade abolition. The story that is told is narrow; it strengthens the thinking about slavery as an economic or socio-political phenomenon that exists in spite of international law. In the counterpoint narrative, the historical point of departure also revolves around the slave trade abolition. But the history that unfolds is different: light is shed on the intricate relationship between the legal abolition of slavery and European imperialism. At the end, it suggests a number of directions so as to go beyond the two narratives.
