Editorial Note
This is the first volume of Brill Research Perspectives in Latinity and Classical Reception in the Early Modern Period. This series aims to address important themes connected with the re-shaping and re-imagining of material inherited from classical antiquity, primarily the Latin language and Latin writing conventions, but also the creative adaptation of Greek and Roman traditions in other languages and media. Issues will consist of individual contributions by leading scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds, providing up-to-date overviews on contexts, key texts, fundamental and controversial questions, existing scholarship, current methods, theories and approaches as well as avenues for further research concerning particular topics and ideas.
These surveys are designed to give scholars new to the specific area and advanced students an introductory overview of the sources, approaches, scholarly history and existing research in the respective field. Thus, readers will be able to use these articles as starting points for researching the subject, using the bibliography to identify the most important primary and secondary sources.
It is hoped that the launch of this series will enable a greater number of researchers to engage with the important and rich material from the early modern period and thus to facilitate further work.
