Abstract

The prejudice which considers Jacopone a traitor to Francis in that he would despise human nature and would herald the need to mortify the flesh to leave space only for the spirit, is powerfully contradicted by the reading of his mystical praises in which he claims the desire to âtasteâ sensibly the presence of God. Iacopone appears unable to find peace in the annihilation of the senses in God: he wants to continue to be their senses, to âfeelâ the Love. In order for this to be possible, Iacopone therefore affirms the need for the senses to be radically purified and sublimated into spiritual senses but also recognizes, on the threshold of unio, that the experience of God seems to transcend all experimentability. However, the space of resurrection, or of persistence, is made possible by the mystical creatural ontology of Iacopone: when creatures discover themselves as the form of the Other, signum Dei, or tension towards the Unreachable and in this perfect image of the God-Love which is intrinsically perennial dispossession, God can be experienced in the inexhaustible tension to perfection inherent in creatural imperfection, like in the Cantico di frate sole by Francis: the transformatio in the God-Love is possible only by remaining men who, as distinct, yearn for the Unattainable, making themselves Love.
