Abstract

Chapter 2 moves from the conditions of the crisis to the rhetorical dynamics of the phenomenon, which I explore in the contrasting representation of certain events as instances of fanaticism or martyrdom. As authors and publishers churned out polemics, they employed certain rhetorical, lexical, and thematic strategies to make their accounts of perfidious fanatics or of glorious martyrs seem like verifiable history. Depending on which image more closely represents reality, one can draw all sorts of conclusions about the advantage or disadvantage of extreme words or actions, about religious orthodoxy, and in the case of the king, his political legitimacy. The Guises, for example, who were the leaders of the Catholic party, are particular targets, since their rigor could look like zeal to Catholics and fanaticism to the Huguenots. Henry III, who returns from Poland to France after the death of his brother Charles IX, takes the throne as a savior but eventually becomes an object of derision in texts such as Jean Boucher’s La Vie et faits notables de Henry de Valois (1589). This account of the last Valois monarch’s death draws attention to the assassin, who is either a fanatic who killed a tolerant prince or a martyr who executed a tyrant, an atheist, and a heretic. These many extreme accounts of the events and personages of the period, often embellished, serve as evidence for the latest accusations that show a surprising endurance as political and religious conflict grinds on.
