In order to make this work reader-friendly, I have used a simple transliteration system of Ottoman Turkish without diacritical marks. Therefore, only long vowels (ā, ī, ū), ayn (ʿ), and hamza (ʾ) have been transliterated. I have used modern Turkish orthography for the names of individuals and places, except for the words or place names that have commonly accepted Anglicized forms (e.g. pasha, agha, Istanbul, Thessaloniki).
For consistency and legibility, I have translated all technical terms and the titles of historical works that are followed by the italicized and transliterated originals (in brackets) in their first appearance. For the terms that do not have direct translations in English (e.g. nahıl), I have used the original term in italicized form and provided a definition in the footnote.
I have used the Gregorian calendar for the dates and modern metric system for weights and measures, with the originals given in brackets.
