Abstract

This chapter examines the theme of ‘integrity’ within ‘receptive integrity’ by bringing into conversation Paul D. Murray and Francis Schüssler Fiorenza, with reference to their respective monographs on fundamental theology—Reason, Truth and Theology in Pragmatist Perspective (Peeters, 2004), and Foundational Theology (Crossroad, 1984)—and subsequent essays by both authors. I demonstrate that Murray’s coherentist account of ‘dynamic integrity’ and Fiorenza’s model of ‘broad reflective equilibrium’ are significantly similar in assigning internal, external, and pragmatic dimensions to understanding Christian tradition and Christian life. By combining the insights of these two post-foundational theological approaches, I argue that a richer model of the dimensions of doctrinal interpretation and application can be developed.
