Abstract

The raise of Euroscepticism in the context of recent years has become real threat for current European order. One of the key root causes is continuous radicalization of both, people and political elites, because they are becoming more sensitive about controversial topics among society. There was partial radicalization in society even in past, but nowadays, in interconnected world challenges become more complex and forms of manipulation has evolved. People have broader opportunities and access to information, what can have, beside positives, also potentially dangerous consequences and can lead to manipulation by different interest group. It is clear that public discussion is more focused on emotions than facts, especially in the Slovak republic. Topics of migration and its perception by Slovak political parties are good example of populism and it often happens that political campaigns and their rhetoric ignore facts and don´t reflect real benefits and challenges of this phenomenon. Authors consider as biggest problem impact of, so called, slow radicalization and public responses to European politics. In our chapter we will, by deep analyses, focus on impact of radicalization in society on topics in campaign in European elections. We will verify our hypothesis on a case study from Slovak republic, where we evaluate impacts of migration on major society and compare real state with context of public opinion. By comparison with other selected EU Member States we will showcase – first, similarities and differences with them, as well as with European average and second, common things which influence public discussion, including a number of paradoxes within itself. The research shows that the Slovak political parties, often the traditional ones, in their election campaigns take over the narratives of extremist parties and their rhetoric often denies the real facts, thus strengthening Euroscepticism among citizens.
