Abstract

In 1887 the diary of Marie Bashkirtseff was published posthumously to public astonishment and acclaim. Not only did it violate contemporary conventions of feminine diary writing, it demonstrated her extraordinary intellect, literary ambitions and determination to be a famous painter ahead of her time. In 1872 Marie arrived in Nice, the indulged child of a Russian family of minor aristocratic background. Over the next twelve years, breaking with the expectations of her class and sex and the social frivolities of Niceâs expatriate cliques, she became a perceptive painter of street life and human suffering before succumbing to tuberculosis in Paris in 1884 at the age of twenty-five.
