This volume developed out of a conference held at the Inter University Centre, Dubrovnik on 10 and 11 April 2015, which was entitled, “Segregation and Integration in the History of the Hospital”. This event was generously funded by a Small Grant in Medical Humanities awarded to Jane Stevens Crawshaw by the Wellcome Trust (107409/Z/15/Z). Additional funds to support postgraduate attendance were received from the Economic History Society and Society for the Social History of Medicine. The conference was co-organised by the International Network for the History of Hospitals and the Croatian Institute of History, Zagreb.
