Abstract

Peace and Conflict Studies is a discipline that attracts students who enter the field because they want to help. Too often we miss the opportunity to engage their passion for significant change because we do not challenge the potential violence of helping, thereby embedding the “helping” process into the core learning process. A responsibility exists to create an educational environment that is transformative, moving students from the passion for helping to the knowledge and skills that form the base for entering a process of change as an ally. Engaging students in peace praxis means moving beyond the violence of helping. The desire to “help” can provide a base for building strength. The opportunity missed occurs within educational institutions and response systems/organisations. Embedding the education and training for responders within a system for self-reflection and respectful knowledge building supports the development of individuals who have the potential to enter the community respectfully engaging members of the community as their peers. Introduced here is an ally model in which responders participate in a critical learning process that moves across self and other. Case studies are used to familiarize students and other responders with ways of engaging in a process of transformation as an ally. This approach is integrated into the development of inclusive positive exchange.
