Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to explore the intratextual relations within Plutarchâs Spartan Lives, against the background of their intertextual links to Xenophonâs Agesilaus and Lacedaimonion Politeia. The continuous narrative made up of the Lives of Lycurgus, Lysander, Agesilaus, Agis and Cleomenes, illustrates the opinion exposed by Xenophon in his Lacedaimonion Politeia (chapt. 14): as long as the Spartans respected the laws of Lycurgus, their city was unrivaled, but the irruption of wealth after 404â¯BC destroyed the system. Plutarch unfolds his argument within the Spartan Lives through a series of intratextual references and a constant intertextual dialogue with the works of Xenophon. Intratextuality as an open relationship between texts does not necessarily yield any clues as to the order in which the Spartan Lives were written, where the Life of Leonidas could have found its place. In conclusion, it appears that Plutarchâs Lives not only illustrate Xenophonâs pronouncement about Sparta, but also enlarge its scope. Intratextuality thus contributes to strengthening the coherence, the originality and the authority of Plutarchâs vision of Spartaâs destiny.
