Frontispiece: Klewang (2nd pattern) 1911 (Authorâs collection).
The klewang is an infantry sabre developed around the turn of the twentieth century for use by the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army in counter-guerrilla warfare. It takes its name from a weapon native to the Indonesian archipelago. By a historical coincidence, the same weapon was issued to units of the American armed forces during World War II as a cutlass. The klewang is among the last types of sword developed for actual fighting use by the armed forces of any nation and probably the last type of sword to be so used. Even after World War II, it saw service in the Indonesian war of independence (1945-49), and, according to some reports, the Korean War (1950-53).
