This monograph is a revised version of a doctoral dissertation accepted by Emory University’s Laney Graduate School in 2016 and I am delighted to thank those who supported me in writing it. Walter T. Wilson directed the dissertation and taught me so much through his comments on my writing and even more through the questions he posed about it. As readers of the dissertation and mentors throughout my graduate school experience, Luke Timothy Johnson and Carol Newsom offered sage counsel and kind encouragement. The errors and infelicities that remain in this study are, of course, my responsibility.
I wish also to thank other guides along the way. Richard Valantasis inspired me to study ethical formation, introduced me to the writings of Pierre Hadot, and, along with his wife, Janet Carlson, showed me incredible hospitality during my time at Emory. Amy-Jill Levine introduced me to biblical studies and its methods in a brilliant and captivating fashion when I was an undergraduate at Vanderbilt University and has encouraged me ever since. I remain grateful.
I am honored that this work appears in Supplements to Novum Testamentum and I thank the series editors, Margaret M. Mitchell and David Moessner, for accepting it for publication. I appreciate as well the careful, detailed feedback the anonymous reader of the manuscript provided.
At Thiel College, my research assistant, Makenna Sanders, deserves thanks for assisting with the indices.
Finally, this monograph would not have been possible without the loving support of my parents, grandparents, aunt, uncles, in-laws, wife, and son. Thank you.
