A Note on Convention
I follow standard accepted translations for architectural terms and, except for terms already popular in English like the Yellow River 黃河 and Bronze Bird Terrace 銅雀臺, I have chosen to leave all proper names in their original form, for example Wenchang Hall for wenchang dian 文昌殿, literally, “the Hall of Literary Brilliance.” I also choose to leave Chinese measure words, article titles, and book titles in pinyin romanization. All translations are my own unless otherwise specified. Official titles are rendered according to Charles Hucker (Taipei: SMC Publishing Inc., 1995).
