Translatorâs Caveat
Where possible, the translator used the most recently published scholarly translations in English of direct citations of Gramsci from the critical edition used by the author in the original text, which will be referred to in the symbols below and with the same nomenclature in the citations in footnotes as the original. Already existing translations in English were also used in other translations of direct citations in the original book and are cited in the symbols below in the footnotes. Where an English translation was unavailable for citations by either Gramsci or other authors, the translator made an original translation, retained the citation from the original in Portuguese or Italian, and indicated that it was an original translation with the symbol OT (Original Translation).
