Summary

A corpus-based analysis is provided of the Russian adverbs teperâ and sejÄas, testing a number of hypotheses put forward by MelâcÌuk (1985). The hypothesis that teperâ (and not sejÄas) is inherently associated with the feature of âcontrastâ or âjuxtapositionâ is verified by our analysis. However, it is not always reflected in objectively identifiable contextual features. As a result, we argue that a difference must be made between âcontrastâ as part of the meaning of a word and as part of the context. Finally, it is shown how systematic differences in use between teperâ and sejÄas boil down to the presence versus absence of the feature âcontrastâ (or âjuxtapositionâ), and how the deictic nature of sejÄas explains some restrictions on its use.
