Abstract

This chapter deals with the intersection of stagecraft and print. Racine creates dramatic effects by the particular ways in which he engineers entrances and exits. But how are these signalled to readers? The French convention relies on numbered scene divisions with lists of characters present in each scene. Translators of Racine into English sometimes observe the French convention, sometimes adopt the alternative convention of using stage directions rather than scene divisions, and sometimes mix the two. The chapter examines the treatment of entrances and exits in eleven translations of Andromaque from John Crowne’s in 1675 to John Edmunds’ in 2013 and attends to the way in which translators, whether consciously or not, modify the impact of these key junctures for their readers (and potential audiences) by changing the way they indicate them on the page.
