Abstract

Borrowing from Margaret Chatterjee the theme of âbeing near enough to listenâ as a precondition of interreligious understanding and communication, this chapter explores how three interweaving dimensions of Wittgensteinâs later thought can usefully promote such understanding. These dimensions are: first, the appreciation of diversity exemplified in the notion of âfamily resemblances,â which has been enthusiastically adopted by many scholars of religion; second, the contention that concepts and beliefs are commonly formed in the midst of complex interpersonal environments, not primarily as the outcomes of detached intellectual deliberation; and third, the injunction to seek analogiesââconnecting linksââbetween oneâs own practices and those of other peoples in order to bridge gaps in understanding. I end with a brief reflection on the place of wonder in Wittgensteinâs thinking.
