Abstract

It seems safe to assume that one of the most interesting myths in Greek and Latin literature during the second and third centuries CE is that of the âandrogyneâ or âhermaphroditusâ. Its symbolism not only affects diverse fields of knowledge, such as anthropology and cosmology, but also a number of different cultures in contact with each other, to wit, Romans, Greeks, Jews, and Christians. Plutarch stands at the crossroads of these cultures, and, consequently, to explore his sources and the meaning of the androgyne myth provides a key to elucidating the Chaeroneanâs relationship with the cultures of his age. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to deepen the cosmological meaning of the moon as arsenothelys, âandrogynousâ, and to contextualize Plutarchâs conception within his contemporary sources, especially the corpus of Nag Hammadi, as well as the Corpus Hermeticum and the heresiologists.
