Abstract

This chapter explores the use of media literacy projects to foster critical understandings of texts, schools, teachers, and students. The framework of critical literacy facilitates understanding of how texts position readers, viewers, or listeners; how readers position texts; and how texts are positioned within social, cultural, historical, and political contexts. I describe how my undergraduate students, future English teachers, use a critical literacy approach in a course assignment, the Media Representations of Teachers Project. Excerpts from their projects show how studying media representations of groups can foster critical literacy in methods courses as well as secondary classrooms and other settings. In a world saturated by media, it is teachersâ responsibility to equip students with such tools: to question and criticize, analyze and decide, talk back and make change.
