Apart from names of political leaders and the town itself, I have changed the names of people that appear in this book as well as the names of their lineages. I have transcribed Arabic terms and expressions following standards established by the International Journal of Middle Eastern Studies (IJMES). When transcribing words from speech, I have maintained pronunciation and spelling of Modern Standard Arabic, except in instances when I use colloquial Arabic for certain terms, which I indicate in the text. I have not transliterated people’s names and commonly known places (such as cities and regions). Throughout the book, translations from Arabic to English are my own.
