Ackowledgments
I would like to thank some of the many individuals and institutions that have contributed to this book. I began this project as a student at Loyola University Chicago. I am especially indebted to Professor Edmondo Lupieri for his generous support and countless hours of reading and discussion. His intellectual curiosity and genuine interest in his students make him a model of teaching and scholarship worthy of emulation. Professor Tom Tobin’s keen intellect and wry humor propelled this project through mountains of minutiae. Professor James Keenan’s philological rigor and expertise in written media were significant assets in a project dealing with ancient manuscripts.
This book was completed while teaching at Pepperdine University, the place where my fascination with biblical scholarship began as an undergraduate. Many of my teacher-mentors have now become colleague-mentors; Professors Randy Chesnutt, Ron Cox, Chris Heard, Tim Willis, and Dan Rodriguez are models of academic inquiry and faithful witness. I wish to express my sincerest gratitude to two other colleagues: Dr. Nick Zola and Dr. Cari Myers. Our chats about theology and fellowship around the table have been a delight.
I would also like to acknowledge two others for their constant presence, warmth, and support throughout the long duration of this project: Dr. Holliday and Mrs. Darling.
Finally, I could not have completed this book without the patience, encouragement, and vitality of Heather Pardee. This book has been a quest to learn about harmony in the Gospels; through our partnership on the journey I have learned much more about true harmonia. I thank you.
