Note on Personal Names
Regarding non-European names, this volume follows the standard practice in East Asian studies. For traditional sources, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean names are presented in traditional fashion, with family name followed by given name. As a number of contributors to this volume are from an East Asian cultural background, we solicited individual preferences and have listed the names accordingly. In most cases, the family name is placed after the given name.
