The structure of GALâs third Supplement volume has been made more transparent by the addition of section and entry headings, especially in Chapter 2 on Syria. For even if there is no denying that the literary production of modern Egypt until the late 1930s was very important, it was judged more appropriate to grant Syrian authors the same kind of visibility as their Egyptian colleagues in the table of contents and the layout of the present work.
In order to improve user experience, this English translation of GAL has been enriched with a list of abbreviations, which has been placed at the end of this volume, after the Addenda et corrigenda to the three Supplement volumes. As a result, this third Supplement volume has become too large to publish in a single tome.
