Acknowledgements
This volume presents some of the papers delivered at two events with the title “Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Religion.” The first was a conference held at Technische Universität Dresden and at Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz on the occasion of the print exhibition “Pieter Bruegel d. Ä. und das Theater der Welt” in July 2014. The second was a panel at the Sixteenth Century Society Conference in New Orleans in October of the same year. We would like to thank all the institutions that supported these endeavors, most of all the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz and their director Ingrid Mössinger as well as her colleagues Kerstin Drechsel and Annette Kindler from the Grafische Sammlung, who were extremely generous hosts. We would also like to thank the Philosophische Fakultät of TU Dresden and all of the members of the Institut für Kunst- und Musikwissenschaft who put their time and energy into the conference and this publication. The DAAD kindly awarded us two travel grants for conference attendance in the US. We are very grateful to Walter Melion and Arjan van Dijk for including this volume into the series Studies on Art, Art History, and Intellectual History at Brill and to Ivo Romein and Wilma de Weert for overseeing the editorial process. Our thanks also go to the two anonymous peer-reviewers for their helpful suggestions. Last but not least, we would like to thank conference contributors for their inspiring lectures and especially the authors of this volume for their thoughtful and elegant manuscripts.
