This edited volume is the result of an international conference titled ‘Reflections on South Africa’s land and agrarian questions after 20 years democracy’. It took place on 14 and 15 August 2014 at the Centre for African Studies (cas) at the University of Cape Town (uct). The editors of this volume were postdoctoral fellows at the time in the nrf Chair in Land Reform and Democracy in South Africa; and the A.C. Jordan Chair in African Studies.
The main funder of the conference was the Heinrich Boll Foundation (Heinrich Böll Stiftung) and we thank them for their generous financial contribution and the collaboration, especially Kulthoum Omari, Paula Assubuji and Layla Al-Zubaidi.
We thank all the participants in the conference, – consisting of scholars, civil society members, activists and friends –, for their engagement and the inspiration they provided for pursuing this book project.
We acknowledge the financial contribution from cas and would like to thank prof. Lungisile Ntsebeza, Noma-Afrika Maseti and colleagues at the centre for their involvement and support. We also thank the uct Research Office and post-graduate Office for making funds available for the conference. Many people at uct assisted and we thank Stacey Moses, Mica la Vita, Tinashe Matonga, Rutendo Hadebe, Lilian Jacobs, and Selina Mudavanhu.
We owe gratitude to all the scholars who reviewed book chapters and took the time to provide all the authors with feed-back on their work. This undoubtedly improved the quality of the volume. The positive and constructive comments of two reviewers who commented on the volume as a whole were very encouraging and appreciated. We hope we managed to engage meaningfully with all of your questions and suggestions.
