Abstract

Amitav Ghoshâs Ibis trilogy offers a reflection on human nature as âembodied plurality.â Rejecting the idea of human identity as a given metaphysical essence, Ghosh explores the creative ways in which humans fashion their identities in and out of the limits of their cultural legacies. The characters are trapped in networks of cultural legacies and structures which they try to elude; the boarding of the ship becomes a decisive moment when they are allowed to weave new and unexpected relationships and to fashion a new cross-cultural and hybrid identity. Neel is the most evident example of this process of self-assertion: he goes through a sort of rite of initiation in Sea of Poppies (2008), which enables him to free himself from the constraints of his culture and tradition and to create his own personal identity, which progressively emerges in the following two books. Thus the trilogy can also be viewed as Neelâs Bildungsroman, while the character of Neel becomes the repository for Ghoshâs postmodern concept of identity: something that is constantly and creatively re-defined, and whose ultimate âessenceâ is an inescapable plurality where âto be different [â¦] is irrevocably to belong.â
