Abstract

The idea of ontology can be so obvious that it is not only accepted as the most important branch of philosophy, but affirmed as a historical fact even when, in reality, there was no ontology until the beginning of the seventeenth century. Albert Zimmermann claimed that in the thirteenth and fourteenth century, ontology and metaphysics were considered equivalent. Is God is an object of metaphysics? God is a part of being qua being, but God can be also the cause of being qua being, which would mean that God is not a part of being qua being, transcending being qua being as its cause. If God is one of the objects of metaphysics, without the power to cause other beings, then God is an object of ontology. In that case then, metaphysics would be equal with modern ontology, where existence of any being has been marginalized. But if in God alone existence is identical to essence, and if God alone can give existence to (create) other beings, then God cannot be treated like one of all the other beings or as a part of the objects of metaphysics (Thomas Aquinas). God as creator of being cannot be ontologized.
