Abstract

Adolf Endler (1939â2009) almost never did what was expected of him. A communist in the West (which he left in 1955), an individualist in the East, and a self-deprecating aesthete in the politically charged times of the Wende, he was notoriously difficult to pigeon-hole. He nevertheless played a very active role in the literary life of the GDR, both as a poet and critic, coining such influential terms as SÃ¤chsische Dichterschule and Prenzlauer Berg connection. Following his exclusion from the Schriftstellerverband in 1979, Endler lived in Berlinâs famous Prenzlauer Berg, developing an absolutely characteristic form of satirical and fantastic short prose in which he couched what ultimately amounted to a fragmentary autobiography. One of the most famous texts that make up his autobiographical work is Tarzan am Prenzlauer Berg, originally written as diary entries for the period 1981â1983, but published after the Wende in 1994. The aim of this article is to examine Tarzan with a view to determining the ways in which Endler negotiates the pitfalls of presenting the past. This involves looking particularly at the complexities of the bookâs time structure, its treatment of realia and representative figures, its fictionalisations and its refusal to mythologise, and its characteristic attention to the detail of language. The result is a demonstration of the ways in which this text not only corrects misapprehensions about East Germanyâs literary landscape, including rehabilitating forgotten tendencies such as surrealism, but also thematises memory and memorialisation in ways that link that landscape very directly to our own contemporary concerns.â©
