The research for this book was begun thanks to a research-fellowship at the European University Institute at Florence. In its early stages it profited from a few short-term travel fellowships granted by the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research NWO. In 2010–2012 my then employer, POSG Hedel, facilitated the progress of the project by allowing me to spend some of my working time in research. Its revision for publication was done in conjunction with my work as researcher in the project Jacopo Strada’s Magnum ac Novum Opus: A Sixteenth-Century Numismatic Corpus, based at the Gotha Research Centre of the University of Erfurt and funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft. The Stichting Oostenrijkse Studien at Leiden University provided a grant which makes it possible to make the book available in Open Access; the expense of the illustrations, borne by the author, was significantly lessened by a grant from the De Gijselaar-Hintzen Fonds.
