Any appraisal of the reception of Whewell’s philosophy must takeinto account the reaction against his opposition to Darwin’s theory and the fact thathe has been incorrectly cast by inductivist historians as a special creationist.Although a vigorous opponent of inductivism, Wettersten does defer to the traditionto the extent that he is embarrassed by Whewell’s theology and, in an attempt torescue Whewell, mistakenly denies that it plays a fundamental role in Whewell’sphilosophy of science.
