Abstract

Chapter 2 contextualises the heresiological texts discussed in the previous chapter, situating them within the intellectual context of the mid-tenth century by analysing the representation of Paulicians in Byzantine texts of the ninth and tenth centuries. While doing so, it posits a “reinvention of the Paulicians” in the mid-tenth century, showing that portrayals of Paulicians in Greek texts were unstable and contested throughout much of the period, particularly in terms of their religious and militaristic faces. This situation only changed during the sole reign of Constantine VII, when the imperatives of dynastic historiography made a coherent account of Paulician activity a desideratum. Once this intellectual context is recognised, it becomes apparent that Peter of Sicily’s History of the Paulicians was the first systematic attempt to provide a holistic account of the movement, including its religious and militaristic phases, in an attempt to subject the Paulicians to the penalty of capital punishment. Despite this, the deficiencies of the text ensured that its testimony was not accepted, with the result that its anodyne but superficially erudite companion text, Pseudo-Photios’ Brief History of the Manichaeans, came to hold greater authority for contemporaries.
